Jack Reacher Books in Order: The Complete Guide (2026)

You can read the Jack Reacher books in any order, but publication order, starting with Killing Floor (1997), is the best way in. Almost every novel works as a standalone, so nothing breaks if you jump around. Publication order just lets you watch the character and the writing evolve.

I binged the first nine Reacher books in college and have picked up every release since. That's 30 novels so far, with number 31 arriving in October 2026. This guide covers every way to read them: publication order, chronological order, and the shortcut path I'd give a friend who asked where to start.

Jack Reacher Books in Publication Order

Any list site can give you the bare order, and the official Jack Reacher site does too. What those lists can't tell you is how the series actually changed over 30 books, because the people compiling them haven't read it. So here's the publication order, split into the four eras of Reacher as I lived through them.

The Hungry Years: 1997 to 2005 (Books 1-9)

These are the nine I binged in college, and they hold up. Child started writing after losing his television job at 40, and the early books read like the work of a man with a mortgage and a grudge. Reacher is at his most unpredictable here, before the series settled into a formula.

• 1. Killing Floor (1997). Reacher steps off a bus in Margrave, Georgia, and gets arrested for murder within the hour. Written in first person, lean and fast, and still the best entry point. Read my review here.

• 2. Die Trying (1998). Reacher is grabbed off a Chicago street alongside an FBI agent and hauled cross-country to a militia compound in Montana.

• 3. Tripwire (1999). A private detective comes looking for Reacher in Key West, then turns up dead. The trail leads back to Vietnam.

• 4. Running Blind (2000). Women connected to Reacher's Army past are being murdered with no visible cause of death. The most puzzle-box mystery of the early run.

• 5. Echo Burning (2001). A woman picks up a hitchhiking Reacher in the West Texas heat and asks him to handle her husband, who gets out of jail in days.

• 6. Without Fail (2002). The Secret Service quietly brings Reacher in to probe a threat against the Vice President. The person who hires him has a personal connection to his late brother.

• 7. Persuader (2003). Reacher goes undercover in a fortified Maine mansion to settle a score with a man he thought he'd killed years ago. A top-five entry for most fans, and the source for Season 3 of the show.

• 8. The Enemy (2004). A prequel set during Reacher's military police days, opening with a dead general and a missing briefcase.

• 9. One Shot (2005). Five shots, five victims, an airtight sniper case, and a suspect who will only say "Get Jack Reacher." The source for the 2012 Tom Cruise film.

If you only read one from this era: Persuader. Killing Floor is the right starting point, but Persuader is the one I'd hand a skeptic.

The Peak: 2006 to 2011 (Books 10-16)

This is the stretch where the series could do no wrong. The adaptations agree, since two of the show's four seasons come from these seven books. It also contains the series' only true two-parter, with Worth Dying For picking up the morning after 61 Hours ends.

• 10. The Hard Way (2006). Reacher watches a ransom payment from a New York cafe and gets pulled into a kidnapping that is not what it seems.

• 11. Bad Luck and Trouble (2007). Someone is killing off Reacher's old special investigations unit, so the survivors reunite. The source for Season 2 of the show.

• 12. Nothing to Lose (2008). Reacher walks between two Colorado towns named Hope and Despair, and Despair really wants him gone.

• 13. Gone Tomorrow (2009). On a late-night New York subway, Reacher watches a passenger tick every box on a suicide-bomber checklist. Season 4 of the show adapts this one.

• 14. 61 Hours (2010). Reacher is stranded in a frozen South Dakota town with a witness to protect and a countdown running.

• 15. Worth Dying For (2010). Picks up immediately after 61 Hours, with a battered Reacher landing in a Nebraska county that the Duncan family runs like a private kingdom.

• 16. The Affair (2011). The prequel that shows the 1997 case that pushed Reacher out of the Army and onto the road. Essential backstory.

If you only read one from this era: Gone Tomorrow. The opening chapters alone earn it.

The Cruise Control Years: 2012 to 2019 (Books 17-24)

Cruise control, in both senses. The Tom Cruise films landed during this stretch, and the books settled into a rhythm where you mostly knew what you were getting. The formula still produced standouts, they just arrived less often.

• 17. A Wanted Man (2012). Reacher, hitchhiking with a freshly broken nose, gets picked up by the wrong car.

• 18. Never Go Back (2013). Reacher finally reaches his old unit's headquarters to meet Major Susan Turner, and walks straight into an arrest. The source for the second Cruise film.

• 19. Personal (2014). Someone takes an impossibly long shot at the French president, and Reacher knows one of the few snipers who could have made it.

• 20. Make Me (2015). A town called Mother's Rest, a missing investigator, and one of the darkest endings in the series.

• 21. Night School (2016). A prequel set in 1996, sending Reacher to Hamburg, where an American is selling something terrifying to a jihadist cell.

• 22. The Midnight Line (2017). Reacher finds a West Point class ring in a pawn shop and sets out to return it. Quietly one of the most humane books in the series.

• 23. Past Tense (2018). Reacher detours to the New Hampshire town where his father grew up and finds no record that the family ever lived there.

• 24. Blue Moon (2019). Reacher helps an elderly couple trapped between Ukrainian and Albanian crime syndicates. The last solo Lee Child novel.

If you only read one from this era: Make Me. It's the darkest the series ever gets.

The Handover: 2020 Onward (Books 25-31)

Lee Child began passing the series to his brother Andrew with The Sentinel, and this is where my ratings flattened. I gave all four books from The Sentinel through The Secret three stars in my reading log. The floor is still solid, the ceiling is lower.

The co-written books read faster and leaner, but they hit the old highs less often. I still buy every release, which probably tells you where I land: diminished, not done.

• 25. The Sentinel (2020). The handover begins. Reacher rescues a small-town IT manager from a kidnapping tied to a ransomware attack.

• 26. Better Off Dead (2021). A veteran hunting for her missing twin brother pulls Reacher into a scheme brewing in an Arizona border town.

• 27. No Plan B (2022). Reacher sees a woman pushed to her death while every other witness swears she jumped.

• 28. The Secret (2023). A 1992 flashback with Reacher on an inter-agency task force, and the rare entry where the villains steal the show. I reviewed it in full, this is where Reacher felt like a side character in his own story.

• 29. In Too Deep (2024). Reacher wakes up injured, handcuffed, and with no memory of how he got there. This is a fresh setup and it sort of works, check my full review here.

• 30. Exit Strategy (2025). A coffee stop in Baltimore puts Reacher in the middle of a setup meant for someone else.

• 31. Chain Reaction (October 20, 2026, upcoming). Brings back Susan Turner from Never Go Back, now a general who needs Reacher found.

If you only read one from this era: The Secret. Not because it's the best, but because it's the most interesting experiment of the bunch.

There are also a couple dozen short stories scattered between the novels. None of them are required reading, so don't worry about hunting them down on a first pass.

The Chronological Order (And Why You Can Skip It)

A few books are prequels set during Reacher's Army years, before he became a drifter. If you want his life story in sequence, the front of the timeline looks like this:

• The Enemy (set in 1990, Reacher as an active MP major)

• The Secret (set in 1992, right after his demotion to captain)

• Night School (set in 1996, seconded to a covert task force)

• The Affair (set in 1997, the case that ends his Army career)

• Killing Floor and everything after

Goodreads maintains a full chronological list that slots in the short stories too, if you want to be a completist about it.

My advice is to ignore chronological order entirely. The prequels land better once you already know the drifter version of Reacher, because the contrast is the point. Watching him operate inside a chain of command only means something after you've seen him answer to nobody.

The Order I'd Actually Recommend

Start with Killing Floor. It's the first book, it's one of the best, and it's written in first person, which makes it the fastest way to understand why this character has carried three decades of novels. If it hooks you, just keep going in publication order.

How the Reacher Show and Movies Map to the Books

Amazon's Reacher show adapts one novel per season, and it deliberately skips around the series rather than going in order. Lee Child has said the standalone nature of the books gave the show the freedom to pick any book for any season.

The two Tom Cruise films pulled from the middle of the series. Jack Reacher (2012) adapts One Shot, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) adapts Never Go Back. The books are better, and not just because Reacher is supposed to be 6'5".
