Honestly, when I first saw the trailers and promotions for "Stick," I wasn't entirely convinced it was for me. A show about golf? I'm not exactly a golf enthusiast, and I even wondered if Apple was perhaps trying a bit too hard to recreate the magic of Ted Lasso. Yet, Apple TV+ has consistently delivered stellar content for me, from the heartwarming Shrinking to the thought-provoking Severance, and of course, the beloved Ted Lasso – truly, not a single dud in the bunch. So, I figured, why not give "Stick" a chance? And let me tell you, I am so incredibly glad I did, because this show is an absolute unexpected delight, easily a 9/10 in my book!

"Stick" quickly revealed itself to be far more than just a golf show; it's a genuinely charming, low-key, underdog, feel-good story that delves deep into themes of failure, love, second chances, and ultimately, redemption. It possesses an incredible ability to be both cosy and profoundly heartwarming, truly tugging at your heartstrings as you watch these characters navigate their lives. The narrative isn't about grand, sweeping gestures, but rather the quiet, profound journey of people finding their way back.

A huge part of the show's charm lies in its exceptional cast. Owen Wilson delivers a truly captivating performance as Pryce Cahill, the washed-out former pro golfer whose career took an unexpected turn. His portrayal of a man betting his entire future on mentoring and coaching the talented young Santi Wheeler (played by Peter Dager) is both nuanced and deeply empathetic. I also absolutely loved the small but mighty group of supporting characters who form this unlikely family: Santi's mom, Elena Wheeler, Lilli Kay as Zero, who becomes Santi's steadfast supporter and love interest, and the truly excellent Marc Maron as Mitts, Pryce's loyal friend and former caddy. Even Timothy Olyphant shines in his role as the adversary and rival, adding just the right amount of tension. Watching them huddle together in their ramshackle RV, driving from one tournament to another, really cemented that "found family" vibe that makes the show so special.

What truly makes "Stick" a hole-in-one for me is how it uses golf as a backdrop for a much larger, more universal human story. It's about Pryce's personal journey of moving on in life, confronting his past, and finding purpose again through Santi. The quiet determination, the small victories, and the genuine connections formed along the way are what resonate most. It's a show that leaves you feeling uplifted and hopeful.

Knowing that "Stick" has been renewed for a second season fills me with so much excitement. I can't wait to see where Pryce, Santi, and their unconventional family go next, and I'm confident it will continue to deliver the same heartfelt, compelling journey I've come to adore.
