I’ll admit it upfront—I’ve never played a Monkey Island game before, nor have I ventured much into the world of point-and-click adventures. But when Return to Monkey Island launched, its vibrant visuals, quirky humor, and the buzz surrounding it piqued my curiosity. When it launched on Apple Arcade, I downloaded it, and finally during the Christmas break found time to immerse myself in this whimsical journey. Spoiler alert: I had an absolute blast.
One of my biggest concerns as a newcomer to the series was whether I’d feel lost in its long-running lore. Thankfully, the game’s scrapbook feature provided a delightful recap of the story so far. It not only introduced me to key characters but made them instantly endearing. By the time I started playing, I felt like I already knew Guybrush Threepwood (the lovable protagonist) and his eccentric cast of friends and foes.
I opted for Casual Mode, which turned out to be perfect for my schedule. With limited time to spend on intricate puzzles, this mode ensured that I could enjoy the game without getting stuck for hours. The puzzles were clever yet accessible, making every solved challenge feel rewarding without being overwhelming.
The point-and-click mechanics were intuitive, even for someone new to the genre. Exploring colorful locations, picking up quirky items, and solving puzzles felt like second nature by the end.
What truly sets Return to Monkey Island apart is its humor. The witty dialogue is packed with jokes that land perfectly—sometimes subtle, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. The voice acting deserves special praise; every character feels alive and brimming with personality. Guybrush’s dry wit and self-deprecating charm are complemented by a cast of memorable characters, from Elaine’s steadfast wisdom to LeChuck’s over-the-top villainy.
The narrative unfolds as Guybrush recounts his latest adventure to his son Boybrush—a charming framing device that adds layers of nostalgia and reflection. Revisiting classic locations like Melee Island and interacting with familiar faces felt like stepping into a warm embrace (even for a first-timer like me). The brisk pacing kept me engaged throughout, with each chapter offering new surprises.
By Chapter 4, I was genuinely curious about what “The Secret of Monkey Island” would turn out to be. The game cleverly hints through its characters that perhaps the "secret" isn’t as grand as we might expect. When the ending arrived, it caught me off guard—but in hindsight, it made perfect sense. It wasn’t about the destination but the journey—a fitting conclusion for a series built on whimsy and adventure.
The art direction deserves a standing ovation. The hand-drawn style is vibrant and full of charm, bringing every location to life with rich detail. From bustling pirate towns to eerie islands shrouded in mystery, each setting feels distinct and memorable.
As someone who came into this game with no prior experience in the series or genre, Return to Monkey Island was an absolute delight from start to finish. Its humor, heartwarming characters, accessible gameplay, and thought-provoking ending left me thoroughly satisfied. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer like me, this game has something special for everyone.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. It’s a 5/5 star experience that reminded me why storytelling in games can be so magical.
