Rating: 9/10 ⭐️

James Gunn’s Creature Commandos is a bold, captivating start to the new DC Universe (DCU), setting a high standard for what’s to come. With its quirky cast of characters, contained yet impactful storyline, and top-notch animation. James Gunn is great at breathe life into lesser-known comic book properties. If this is how the DCU begins, fans have every reason to be excited.

We are introduced to Task Force M, a ragtag group of monsters who are as tragic as they are endearing. Each episode delves into the backstory of one team member, humanizing these so-called monsters and making them endearing. Whether it’s the Bride’s rejection of her destiny, Doctor Phosphorus’s tragic transformation, or the Weasel’s surprisingly emotional arc, every character is given a moment to shine. Their bleak histories evoke sympathy and add layers of complexity that make them more than just tools for action sequences.

One of the show’s greatest strengths is its ability to balance a self-contained narrative with world-ending implications. The mission at the heart of Creature Commandos is gripping without feeling overwhelming, focusing on character development and emotional beats. Gunn masterfully weaves individual backstories into the larger plot, creating a seamless narrative.

James Gunn’s signature style is evident throughout Creature Commandos. From well-timed needle drops to dark humor and emotionally resonant storytelling, his fingerprints are all over this series. Fans of his previous work (Guardians of the Galaxy) will find much to love here. However, those less fond of his style might struggle with some of the quippy dialogue and irreverent tone.

The DCU under Gunn’s leadership is bold, emotional, and unapologetically unique. By focusing on characters often relegated to the sidelines in superhero lore, Gunn has crafted a story that feels fresh yet familiar. The show’s mix of humor, tragedy, and action makes it a standout entry in the superhero genre.

If you’re looking for an unconventional take on comic book storytelling or simply want to see monsters with heart save the day, Creature Commandos is well worth your time. It’s a 9/10 for me—a near-perfect start to what promises to be an exciting new chapter for DC.
